On Monday 15 June 2026, Luxembourg's Prime Minister, Luc Frieden, and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, Xavier Bettel, held bilateral meetings with Montenegro's Prime Minister, Milojko Spajić, and Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Taras Kachka.

Prime Minister Luc Frieden also met with his Moldovan counterpart, Alexandru Munteanu, while Minister Bettel received Moldova's Deputy Prime Minister, Cristina Gherasimov.

According to Luxembourg's Ministry of State and Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, the meetings aimed to strengthen bilateral relations between Luxembourg and the three countries. Key European and international issues, as well as the question of European Union enlargement, were also discussed.

Regarding EU enlargement, the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister congratulated Ukraine and Moldova on the opening of Cluster 1, covering the Fundamentals, and Montenegro on the provisional closure of two additional negotiating chapters.

They highlighted Luxembourg's commitment to a strong and united European Union and stressed that any future enlargement should also represent a geopolitical investment in the stability, prosperity and security of the continent.

Luc Frieden and Xavier Bettel reiterated the importance of respecting the Copenhagen criteria and underlined that the accession process must remain merit-based. They also encouraged all three countries to continue implementing the reforms necessary to align with the EU acquis.
