On Monday 15 June 2026, the Directorate General of Immigration of Luxembourg’s Ministry of Home Affairs published its monthly overview of applications for international protection and temporary protection in the Grand Duchy for May 2026.
International Protection
A total of 110 people applied for international protection in Luxembourg in May 2026, compared to 171 in May 2025 and 141 in May 2024. Since the beginning of the year, Luxembourg has received 567 applications for international protection, down from 793 during the same period in 2024.
Authorities notified 199 decisions on international protection applications in May 2026, bringing the total number of decisions this year to 731. Of these, 188 resulted in the granting of refugee status and eight in subsidiary protection status. A total of 199 applications were rejected under the normal procedure, while 53 were rejected under the accelerated procedure.
According to the directorate, the highest number of applicants in May were from Syria (24), followed by Sudan (thirteen), Eritrea and Ukraine (nine each), and Iraq, Pakistan and Türkiye (five each). So far in 2026, most applications have come from Syrian nationals (77), followed by Eritrean (48), Sudanese (46), Algerian (34) and Venezuelan (32) nationals.
Temporary Protection
A total of 74 people applied for temporary protection in Luxembourg in May 2026, down from 99 in April. Since the beginning of the year, the country has received a total of 391 temporary protection applications. All 74 applications submitted in May came from Ukrainian nationals.
Authorities notified 69 decisions on temporary protection applications in May, bringing the total number of decisions this year to 3,953. Of these, 334 resulted in the granting of temporary protection, while 3,583 concerned renewals.
Ukrainian nationals have represented the vast majority of applicants for temporary protection so far this year, accounting for 375 of the 391 applications submitted (95.9%).
