On Wednesday 16 April 2025, STATEC announced that bankruptcies in Luxembourg remained stable during the first quarter of 2025 but the number of liquidations increased.

In a press release, STATEC reported that the latest figures from the Ministry of Justice/STATEC show the number of bankruptcies in the first quarter of 2025 was 301, compared to 300 judgements in the first quarter of 2024. According to initial estimates, the potential loss of salaried jobs linked to bankruptcies is down by more than 27% compared to the first quarter of 2024.

Construction is the sector most affected by bankruptcies since 2023. However, the situation eased significantly in the first quarter of 2025, both in absolute numbers (with 50 bankruptcies, 15 fewer than in the first quarter of 2024), and in terms of potential loss of salaried employment (-42%). The trade sector recorded 37 bankruptcies in the first quarter of 2025, down 21% compared with the first quarter of 2024, as did salaried job losses (-17%). There were also 38 bankruptcies in the Horesca sector (+31% compared with the 1st quarter of 2024), although initial estimates of job losses are down (-53%).

STATEC reported that liquidations (voluntary) were up 55% in the first quarter of 2025. However, STATEC stated that this development must be qualified, as the number of liquidations was at a historically low level in the first quarter of 2024. Around 45% of the companies liquidated during the period under review are registered as holding companies and investment funds.
