The Rails Girls Luxembourg 2017 event took place for the fourth consecutive year on Saturday 21 October.
Organised by WIDE (Women in Digital Empowerment) and supported by Digital Luxembourg in partnership with the Service de la Jeunesse, Rail Girls Luxembourg 2017 took place at the Forum Campus Geesseknäppchen in Luxembourg-Merl as part of the European Commission's initiative, EU Code Week.
Rails Girls is an important event on the social calendar for WIDE, a benchmark organisation for the inclusion of women in new technologies in the Grand Duchy. This year, the organisers noted over 120 new subscribers with a particulary high interest from young girls. Many of secondary school female pupils took part, with the youngest participant aged just 11 years. The event was coached and supervised by 25 volunteers in the sector.
The event started with a warm welcome on behalf of WIDE founders, Marie-Adelaide Gervis and Marina Andrieu. What followed after was an entire day of learning Ruby and plenty of fun activities and inspiring presentations such as: ‘Introduction to RoR’ with Margarita; ‘Code like a <div>a with Maria Pia Montoro; ‘Energisers and algorithmic thinking’ with Nizar Ayed; ‘Bentobox’ with Heidi Flinkman; Demo Robotics with LTAM & Robotics cup team; also, Michael Leal from Code Club Luxembourg came to visit together with BOB the Robot.
They even took 5 minutes to connect via Skype with their fellow Rails Girls from Brussels (Belgium) and Cluj-Napoca (Romania), both organising Ruby on Rails workshops the same Saturday. Actually Rails Girls took place in around 10 cities worldwide, at the same time. By the end of the workshop, the participants were able to create using their new coding skills, their very first App, with the invaluable step-by-step help from the coaches.
The event was supported by Digital Letzebuerg and the Service National de la Jeunesse.
