On Sunday 23 October 2022, the fourth edition of Luxembourg’s Race for the Cure event, organised by Think Pink Luxembourg asbl, in collaboration with Think Pink Europe, raised approximately €9,000 for the cause.
Over 350 participants, dressed in as much pink as they could, took part in the event near the Echternach lake.
Think Pink Luxembourg teamed up with Think Pink Europe in 2018 to facilitate the exchange of information and best practices on health care and research in Europe with the aim of reducing disparities in access to health care between European countries
This year, the event was organised with the help from the volunteers and cooperation from the municipality of Echternach and the Echternach Youth Hostel.
According to the organisers, the Race for the Cure is not a race against competitors, but rather a race against time, to find a cure for breast cancer. Most of the funds raised will remain in Luxembourg for Think Pink Luxembourg projects with 20% of any European sponsorships going to Think Pink Europe for community projects to help close the gap in screening, care and treatments in Europe. The Race for the Cure, started in United States in 1986, is a global fundraising event.
In its efforts to be more environmentally friendly, Think Pink Luxembourg did not use plastic number bibs, balloons, disposables or chemical toilets on this occasion. Participants were requested to bring their own drinks as bottled water was not provided. Bottles could be refilled at the youth hostel. Tubs of pink flowers used as decorations were provided by GaardenKarisma.
Think Pink Luxembourg had set up an information stand with leaflets on breast cancer, self-examination, screening and resources available in Luxembourg. Demonstration models were available for people to learn about breast self-examination and helped parents keen to explain the importance of being body aware from an early age.
Think Pink Luxembourg raised €260,000 between 2009 and 2021.
