The Directorate of Immigration of Luxembourg's Ministry of Home Affairs has published figures regarding applications for international protection (asylum) and temporary protection in the Grand Duchy for the months of January and February 2024.
International protection
A total of 161 people applied for international protection in Luxembourg in January 2024, down from 182 in December 2023 and from 180 in January 2023. In February 2024, the number of applications dropped further to 149.
144 decisions on asylum applications were taken in January 2024, with 57 applicants being granted refugee status. In February 2024, 166 decisions were taken, with 73 applicants receiving refugee status.
Eritreans (34) represented the largest group among applicants seeking asylum in Luxembourg in January 2024, followed by Syrian (27) and Venezuelan nationals (seventeen). In February 2024, there were more applicants from Eritrea (36), as well as Colombia (thirteen), Afghanistan and Syria (twelve each).
In the first two months of 2024, Luxembourg thus received a total of 310 applications for international protection - down slightly from 315 received during the same period in 2023.
Temporary protection
A total of 62 people applied for temporary protection in Luxembourg in January 2024. More specifically, 50 Ukrainians and twelve individuals from other unspecified countries applied for this status in January. One person had decided (for unspecified reasons) not to apply for the status in the end despite previously having indicated their interest in doing so.
In February 2024, 83 people applied for temporary protection, whilst an additional four individuals had withdrawn their application. Ukrainians (70) once again represented the largest group; there were also thirteen applicants from other unspecified countries.
A total of 57 decisions on temporary protection applications were taken in January 2024, with 53 applicants being granted this status in Luxembourg; four were rejected. In February 2024, 79 decisions were taken, with 63 applicants granted temporary protection; sixteen were refused this status.
In January and February 2024 combined, Luxembourg thus received a total of 145 applications for temporary protection. Ukrainians represented the largest group (120; 82.76%) but there were also applications from seven Algerian nationals and eighteen nationals of other unspecified countries during this period.
