At around 06:30 on Saturday morning, work began on the new gateway in the city centre that will connect Pfaffenthal to Pescatore Park.
A convoy carrying the two separate parts needed for the passageway arrived at the Côte d'Eich on the night between Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 August 2015, before the two pieces were fitted with metal cladding. The first structure, measuring 32 metres, was then mounted in Pescatore park the following Saturday, before preparations were made to the the second, larger structure measuring 40 metres. The two pieces were then connected to one another.
Members of the public came to watch as final adjustments were made on Saturday afternoon to the two parts in Pescatore park. A concrete tower has also been put in place, and the two combined elements will be 'jetted' or manoeuvred in the next few months towards the concrete tower in order to be fitted into their final position. The structure, which will eventually consist of the already-completed passageway leading to the future Pfaffenthal lift, will weigh a total 120 tonnes.
A significant part of the Côte d'Eich was closed over the weekend and traffic redirected via Avenue Porte-Neuve and Limpertsberg in order for the work to be carried out, but the road opened again at 05:00 this morning. The next part of the process is planned for mid-September and the lift will be in operation from Spring 2016.
