Reports from the Grand Ducal Police in the last two weeks, reveal Luxembourg has experienced an uprising in break-ins in both buildings and vehicles.
On Monday 27 July 2015, a total 4 vehicle break-ins in Walferdange, Bridel, Strassen and Bascharge took place, with a further 2 criminal trespasses into houses in Hagen and Goetzingen arising on the same day.
Since then, the Grand Ducal Police have reported 4 more vehicle break-ins and 9 more building breaking and entering incidents. The majority of break-in episodes were found to have taken place during the night, but in two instances where the perpetrators were attempting morning robberies, other actors were able to intervene. On 3 August 2015, a man broke into a family house in Gonderange at around 11:15. Upon arrival at the scene, the Police discovered the suspect in possession of a stolen ladies handbag, and was then arrested and brought before the examining magistrate.
Similarly, on the morning of 5 August 2015, a burglar was seen fleeing through a broken window of a house in Mamer, where he had stolen a wallet containing documents and cash. The perpetrator was spotted during the escape by a neighbour, who described him as a 40-year old male, around 180 cm tall, with close cropped hair and a thin build. He was reportedly wearing a white T-shirt of unknown label, blue jeans and possibly leather gloves.
Recent vehicle break-ins were also found to have been perpetrated largely during the night. The break-ins have also been occurring in conjunction with the theft of vehicle parts such as license plates and wheels, instances of which took place on 27 July and 1 August 2015.
The Police have not made any comment on potential reasons for the sudden surge in crime, or whether this trend is likely to continue.
