On Wednesday 16 April 2025, Luxembourg's Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture announced the launch of Méi Weed / More Weeds, an innovative online tool that simplifies grazing for farmers and optimises grassland management.
According to the ministry, grassland management and dairy production are important cornerstones of Luxembourg's agriculture.
With optimal use of pasture grass, pasture farming is economically, ecologically and socially sustainable. Furthermore, it guarantees the best animal welfare. Knowledge of the amount of grass that will grow in the coming days is helpful in pasture management.
To simplify pasture farming for farmers and optimise grassland management, the ministry is making the online tool "Méi Weed" available on the website https://www.agrimeteo.lu/ at the beginning of the grassland season.
The new tool enables farmers to more accurately determine the amount of grass present on their pasture plots and thus manage their grassland in an optimal and climate-friendly manner. The developed forecast model was adapted to Luxembourg's soil-climatic conditions and estimates daily grass growth based on weather data from AgriMeteo. The forecasts thus facilitate forward-looking, climate-friendly pasture planning and optimal supplementary feeding for their grazing animals.
The model was developed as part of the EIP research project "Méi Weed" and was funded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture. The project sponsor is the Luxembourg Association for Integrated Land Management (FILL) in partnership with the Lycée Technique Agricole (LTA), the Luxembourg Institute of Biological Agriculture and Agroecology (IBLA), CONVIS, and the Bern University of Applied Sciences for Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences (HAFL). The project was supported by the Rural Economy Service (SER) and the Administration of Technical Services for Agriculture (ASTA).
