On Thursday 13 November 2025, Luxembourg’s Ministry of State reported on Prime Minister Luc Frieden’s working visit to Seattle and San Francisco (United States), aimed at strengthening technological, scientific and economic ties between Luxembourg and the US.

The four-day programme, which took place from Saturday 8 to Wednesday 12 November 2025, centred on high-level meetings with leading institutions and companies, mainly in the digital sector, with an emphasis on strategic and geopolitical trends in artificial intelligence and innovation more broadly.

According to the ministry, discussions with global technology companies such as Nvidia, Amazon, Google and Microsoft provided an opportunity to explore the latest developments, exchange views on issues related to new technologies and reinforce cooperation with one of the world’s most dynamic innovation hubs.

“Strengthening European digital sovereignty is essential. But sovereignty must not be equated with protectionism; it is synonymous with the freedom to choose,” stated Prime Minister Frieden.

The ministry added that, given the economic and societal opportunities offered by artificial intelligence, it is important to strengthen ties between Luxembourg and the United States, a key technological player, by fostering strategic partnerships and creating synergies in a rapidly changing geopolitical and economic landscape.

In this context, the Prime Minister also held discussions with Condoleezza Rice and several renowned professors on major current geopolitical issues relating to technology, defence and energy at the Hoover Institute at Stanford University, considered the cradle of Silicon Valley. Also in Palo Alto, the visit continued with a meeting at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI, where in-depth discussions took place on the societal implications of artificial intelligence.

Prime Minister Frieden also met with representatives of venture capital funds to explore opportunities for cooperation and investment to support the development of strategic sectors such as digital technology and defence.

In addition to the focus on artificial intelligence, the Prime Minister used his West Coast visit to reaffirm the Government’s space ambitions. He visited the American aerospace giant Boeing in order to reaffirm close ties with Luxembourg and key players such as SES, Cargolux and Luxair.

The ministry added that the Prime Minister attended the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Berkeley Space Center and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) of the University of Luxembourg, aimed at strengthening collaborative research and teaching in space science and technology.

Moreover, on Tuesday 11 November 2025, on the occasion of Veterans Day, the US national day of remembrance, the Prime Minister met Ken Mar, a US Army veteran who fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He awarded him the distinction of Officer of the Order of Merit as a tribute to him and all veterans for their service to Luxembourg and Europe.
