Luxembourg Joins Finance Ministers Meeting in Liechtenstein

On Monday 24 August 2026, Luxembourg’s Ministry of Finance reported that German-speaking finance ministers from Luxembourg, Germany, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Austria had met in the Principality of Liechtenstein to discuss Europe’s competitiveness, fiscal policy challenges and the resilience of the financial sector.

The Grand Duchy was represented by Luxembourg’s Minister of Finance Gilles Roth. The discussions focused particularly on simplifying administrative rules as a way to strengthen competitiveness, encourage investment and improve the stability and resilience of the European economy.

This year’s meeting took place against a backdrop of increasing international competition and ongoing geopolitical challenges.

“We want to sustainably strengthen the competitiveness of our economies. Particularly in times of profound change, regular exchanges with our partners are crucial,” said Minister Roth. “Together, we are creating reliable framework conditions for businesses, promoting innovation and thus strengthening Europe’s future competitiveness. The interests of our citizens always remain at the centre,” he added.

The meeting was hosted by Liechtenstein Prime Minister and Minister for General Government Affairs and Finance Brigitte Haas. Other participants included German Vice-Chancellor and Federal Minister of Finance Lars Klingbeil, Swiss Federal Councillor and Head of the Federal Department of Finance Karin Keller-Sutter and Austrian State Secretary Barbara Eibinger-Miedl.

The meeting concluded with an audience with Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein at Vaduz Castle.

This year marked the sixteenth edition of the meeting of German-speaking finance ministers. The first gathering took place in Luxembourg in 2010, while the Grand Duchy also hosted last year’s meeting to mark its fifteenth anniversary.
