On Thursday 2 October 2025, Luxembourg’s Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade (MAE) announced that it is closely monitoring the situation of the Global Sumud and Thousand Madleens flotillas heading to Gaza, as well as the situation of a Luxembourg citizen who is on board.
The ministry said serious concern was expressed after contact was lost for several hours with the vessel carrying the Luxembourg citizen, following reports that several flotilla boats had been intercepted by Israeli forces during the night. Luxembourg has called on the Israeli authorities to ensure the safety of all participants, to respect the right to consular protection and to refrain from using force against those on board.
The ministry confirmed that consular services had remained in contact with the Luxembourg coordinators of the flotilla project before and after departure, warning them of the risks involved in participation.
Luxembourg was in close contact with Italian and Spanish authorities, who have maritime rescue resources available during the flotilla’s passage in international waters and added that it continued to liaise closely with European partners, including the Belgian authorities on consular matters.
The ministry reiterated that its priority remains the establishment of a ceasefire, the release of hostages and the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza through safe and secure channels.
