Luxembourg's Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade and the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) have reported that the Grand Duchy recently helped the World Health Organization (WHO) evacuate a child from the Gaza Strip to receive life-saving treatment.

On Wednesday 15 January 2025, in coordination between the aforementioned Luxembourg authorities, a one-year-old child and three members of his family were evacuated by Luxembourg Air Ambulance to Tirana, Albania. The authorities reported that, given the destruction of the medical infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, adequate treatment of the young patient, who was suffering from a serious illness, was no longer possible on-site.

The evacuation is being carried out as part of the overall efforts of the WHO to facilitate the evacuation of children and other civilians from the Gaza Strip to third countries to receive life-saving treatment.

Co-financed by Luxembourg's Foreign Ministry and the European Union under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, the operation is being carried out using flight hours reserved for medical evacuations (MEDEVAC) of the emergency.lu system.
