Two individuals with links to Luxembourg and its international community were recently recognised for their contributions to society as part of the 2025 New Year Honours List in the United Kingdom.
As part of the New Year Honours, there are various components, including the New Year Honours List 2025, the New Year Honours List 2025: High Awards, the New Year Honours 2025: Overseas and International List, the New Year Honours list 2025: Home Office and the New Year Honours 2025: Ambulance Service list.
This lists recognises individuals' selfless service to others across the UK and abroad.
Among the recipients were Eleanor Sharpston, formerly Advocate General at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, and Caroline (Carrie) Cannon, Founder, Director/President of Think Pink Luxembourg which supports women and their families living in Luxembourg with the day to day reality of breast cancer and other cancers.
New Year Honours 2025 Overseas and International List: Order of St Michael and St George
Eleanor Sharpston has been awarded the Order of St Michael and St George (Dame Commander) and shall have the initials DCMG after her name. In the announcement, she was credited for being a Yorke Distinguished Visiting Fellow: lately Arthur Goodhart Visiting Professor in Legal Science; formerly Advocate General, European Court of Justice. Her award was for services to Justice and to the Education of Law in the UK and Europe.
The announcement also mentioned she "is a distinguished, experienced, and widely respected Barrister who is recognised for her outstanding and sustained contribution to law and justice, including in her former role as Advocate General at the European Court of Justice, as well as a major contribution as a law educator in significant positions in the UK and across Europe, most recently in a high-profile Professorship at the University of Cambridge".
Caroline Cannon has been awarded the Order of the British Empire (MBE). Her award is for services to Cancer Patients in Luxembourg.
