Luxembourg's Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity has reported that Minister Serge Wilmes will participate in the negotiations of the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, from Tuesday 19 to Friday 22 November 2024.
Luxembourg's Minister of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity will be accompanied by a delegation composed of negotiators and climate policy experts from the Environment Ministry, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Finance and two Luxembourg youth climate delegates.
The ministry noted that the global community made "significant commitments" at COP28 in Dubai last year, including phasing out fossil fuels, tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030 and doubling the annual rate of improvement in energy efficiency. The international community also committed to ending global deforestation by 2030 and promoting resource efficiency in a circular economy.
This year, in addition to implementing last year's decisions on energy, mitigation and adaptation targets, climate finance will be at the centre of discussions. The New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) will replace the $100 billion annual collective goal of industrialised countries after 2025 and broaden the base of international climate finance.
