Mohammad Shakir al-Abad, the Syrian asylum seeker living in Luxembourg whose family was caught in a Russian air strike in Aleppo, has now been reunited with two of his daughters.
The Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign Affairs intervened in the situation in order to help bring Mohammad's daughter Amirat, into Turkey from across the Syrian border, where Amirat was staying with her uncle and which Mr. Al-Abad was prevented from entering for two days. 4-year-old Rayan, who sustained injuries in the attack and was hospitalised in Turkey, has now also been reunited with her father. However, Rayan's health is still in precarious condition and she is suffering from post traumatic stress. She will remain hospitalised in the Turkish city of Kilis at the advice of hospital authorities, and is due to undergo an operation.
The third daughter thought to have survived and last reported to be missing, has unfortunately still not been found. The Turkish Red Cross continues to research in various refugee camps and area hospitals in a bid to find her.
Mr. Al-Abad is due to return to Luxembourg in 15 days. The Association de Soutien aux Travailleurs Immigrés (ASTI) reported that donations have enabled the association to raise a total of €17,612 for Mr. Al-Abad. A cheque for €3,560 was presented to Mohammad on Monday 22 February 2016, and another €3,657 on the following Wednesday. ASTI announced that the remaining amount will be handed to Mr. Al-Abad upon his return to the Grand Duchy.
Mr. Al-Abad thanked all those who had made both small and large contributions. Mohammad and his family will be supported upon their return by OLAI and Caritas, which will be offering psychological help to support the family through their ordeal.
