The Institute of European Studies at the University of California in Berkeley (USA) is holding an event next Wednesday 3 Feburary on the topic of "Did the EU Progress under the Luxembourg Presidency?" with Georges Schmit, Consul General of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in San Francisco, as guest speaker.
Georges Schmit will reflect on the achievements and challenges of the 12th Luxembourg Presidency of the EU Council which took place in a particularly difficult context, which saw the European Union facing a number of unprecedented challenges. The tragic worsening of the refugee crisis and the horrific attacks in Paris on 13 November required a reactive and decisive approach at the European level. In spite of these events, which affected Europe deeply, Luxembourg made significant progress on promoting growth and jobs, boosting the single digital market, deepening social cohesion and strengthening Europe’s international presence.
Georges SCHMIT began serving as Consul General of Luxembourg and Executive Director of the Luxembourg Trade and Investment Office in San Francisco on 1 October 2009. He spent his entire professional career in economic policy and served as Director General for Enterprise Policy, Economic Development and Foreign Trade at the Luxembourg’s Ministry of the Economy and Foreign Trade. In this position he formulated and oversaw policies in the areas of entrepreneurship, R&D and innovation, inward investment and foreign trade promotion.
