The Sea Shepherd activist from Luxembourg, Kevin Schiltz, has been ordered on Friday by a court in the Faroe Islands to pay 5,000 crowns (circa €670), or spend eight days in jail.
Kevin Schiltz was arrested in the Faroe Islands on 24 July along with four other Sea Shepherd activists when attempting to prevent the slaughter of pilot whales. A number were arrested and detained before being subsequently released, yet their passports had been retained pending the court ruling.
Like in Luxembourg where the public prosecutor can claim a specific amount in damages, the same is the case in the Faroe Islands; here the prosecutor had demanded a fine of €3,500, with the defence calling for the acquittal of the activists who had been protestign against whaling.
The organisation was fined €10,000 while other activists were fined up to €4,500 each. Appeals have been lodged on behalf of the defence who have indicated that the activists would rather be forced to spend time in jail rather than accepting the ruling which supports the huinting of whales.
