The renowned Echternach dancing procession (Sprangprozessioun) will take place on 11 June 2019.
Each year on Whit Tuesday, thousands of people gather in Echternach for a tradition included on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list; the "Echternach Sprangprozessioun" or the Dancing Procession of Echternach.
This cultural phenomenon, held in honour of the founder of the Abbey of Echternach, sees people dance and hop sideways and forward to a polka melody. The procession ends at the tomb of the patron saint located in the crypt of the papal basilica in the heart of the abbey city of Echternach. The purpose of this tradition is one of joy and prayer, a form of communication between God and the body.
