Details: The University of Luxembourg is hosting the 3rd workshop on satellite communication - How to Regulate Against Harmful Interference to Satellite Signals - on Thursday 5 June and Friday 6 June 2014.
Over the last two years, the instances of deliberate, harmful interference to signals from broadcasting and communication satellites has been on the increase. Cases intended to intentionally block the reception of signals cause disruption and loss of business hours. The question is, can international, regional or national regulation help to alleviate this problem and how? A workshop organised by Prof Mahulena Hofmann, University of Luxembourg SES Chair in Satellite Communications and Media Law, in collaboration with the National Research Fund of Luxembourg (FNR), as well as the University’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT), seeks to address this question. It will analyse the regulatory aspects of this phenomenon and ask key questions such as “Is the present international regulatory system, based on the legal instruments of the International Telecommunication Union, sufficiently equipped to prevent harmful interference, and what are the legal consequences of non-compliance with these rules?” A selection of speakers from national and international academia, national regulatory authorities as well as operators will provide an international, multidimensional and critical analyses of this complex issue. The workshop will take place in English on Thursday 5 June 2014 from 13:30 - 19:00, and Friday 6 June 2014 from 09:30 – 16:00.
Venue: The workshop will be hosted by the University of Luxembourg at the Weicker Building, Conference Room B001, 4 rue Alphonse Weicker, L-2721, Luxembourg-Kirchberg.
