Luxembourg's Inspectorate of Labour and Mines (Inspection du travail et des mines - ITM) launched yesterday the Healthy Workplaces Campaign 2020-2022 of the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA).

This campaign will tackle work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) over the next 24 months.

As the coordinator of this campaign at the national level and taking into account the current health situation, the ITM held a conference and an online seminar on Thursday. Tom Oswald, general coordinator of the Ministry of Labour, Employment and the Social and Solidarity Economy, kicked off this day of information, awareness and training. Nicolas Schmit, European Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, congratulated the ITM on organising this day.

The subject of the morning, “Musculoskeletal disorders, how to avoid them?”, revolved around the link between the work environment and MSDs. The ITM director introduced the topic before presentating the inspectorate's approach. Invited experts, representing different sectors of activity and company sizes, shared their experiences and presented practical cases describing the causes of MSDs from their environment and providing information on their preventative approaches.

The theme of the afternoon, “Musculoskeletal disorders: testimonials on prevention in the workplace”, focussed on the scope of the phenomenon and its impact on occupational safety and health. The session started with an analysis of the magnitude of MSD problems from an employee perspective, followed by a presentation of the psychological factors influencing MSDs. Finally, experts from the health sector presented their practical approach, as well as their methodology in terms of training within the health establishment.
