The Luxembourg Economic Committee (Comité de conjoncture) met on Wednesday, under the chairmanship of the Minister of the Economy Franz Fayot, to analyse the current labour market and national economic situation.

In August 2020, 3,085 companies (compared to 3,361 the previous month) submitted a request for partial unemployment in order to be able to benefit for the month of September from the special provisions in force until 31 December 2020 due to of the COVID-19 crisis.

After analysing the applications, the Economic Committee approved 2,966 requests (compared to 3,162 the previous month), 43.5% of which came from the hotel and catering, tourism and events sectors. The requests granted for the month of September concern 15,690 employees (in full-time jobs) compared to 25,213 employees for the previous month.

The Economic Committee then analysed in more detail the economic, financial and social situation of six companies wishing to implement a job retention plan, as well as that of eighteen companies wishing to develop a recovery plan.

In addition, the Economic Committee approved two requests for tax exemption from voluntary severance pay. This request concerns 20 people.

Finally, the Economic Committee issued three positive opinions in relation to the legal provisions on early retirement-adjustment.

Regarding deadlines, requests for the granting of partial unemployment must be made in advance each month between the 1st and 12th day of the month preceding the month covered by the request. Thus, for the month of October 2020, requests must be submitted exclusively via MyGuichet.lu between 1 and 12 September 2020 inclusive.

The next Economic Committee meeting is scheduled for 21 September 2020.
