Luxembourg earned two bronze medals and four honourable mentions at the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), held in Shanghai, China, from Tuesday 9 to Thursday 21 July 2026.
The Grand Duchy finished 73rd among the 117 participating countries, recording its best result since 2009. One of the medallists, Khalid Khan, won his third IMO bronze medal, while his brother, Saad Khan, earned a bronze medal on his debut at the competition.
The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for high school students and is held annually in a different host country.
Luxembourg first participated in the IMO in 1979 and has now taken part in the competition 41 times. Over the years, the Grand Duchy has won two gold medals, five silver medals and 27 bronze medals, in addition to numerous honourable mentions.
The Luxembourg team was prepared by mathematics specialists involved in the IMO training programme, led by Pascal Zeihen as Team Leader and Gincario Keng as Deputy Team Leader.
The first IMO was held in Romania in 1959 with seven participating countries. Since then, it has expanded to include more than 100 countries from five continents, with the competition taking place annually in a different host nation.
The 68th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is scheduled to take place in Budapest, Hungary, from Thursday 16 to Sunday 26 July 2027.
