On Friday 16 January 2026, Luxembourg-based sailing club Sailing Passion asbl, the organisers of the Siggy’s Cup, marked the event’s 20th anniversary, bringing together around 80 guests.
This friendly regatta was launched in 2007 on the initiative of a group of friends with a passion for sailing and the sea. The first edition, held in the south of France, brought together seven boats. Participation grew steadily in the following years, rising to fourteen boats in the second year, twenty-one in the third and reaching around thirty boats before the COVID-19 pandemic. After a temporary decline during the pandemic, the event has seen participation increase again each year, with recent editions taking place in destinations such as Sicily.
During the event, Chronicle.lu spoke with Ariane Roquebert, Project Manager and President of Sailing Passion asbl, who explained that the regatta is open to anyone living or working in Luxembourg. “It’s a strong but small community,” she said, adding that while there are many sailors in Luxembourg, they often lack opportunities to sail. “This is how we started – by realising that there were many sailors who wanted to participate, then calling friends, who called their friends, and it grew from there.”
One of the activities organised during the anniversary event involved the bottling of wine sourced from the Bordeaux region, with around 300 bottles filled on site for participants to take home or enjoy during the evening.
Explaining the idea behind the initiative, Ariane Roquebert said she wanted to move away from traditional crystal sailing trophies. “They were very heavy and often just stayed on a shelf, gathering dust,” she said. “So now we will give bottles of wine as prizes for the first, second and third places – something the crews can actually share and enjoy.”
The next edition of the Siggy’s Cup will take place from 2 to 9 May 2026 in Kos, Greece, with seventeen boats expected to take part, according to the organisers.
Ariane Roquebert also highlighted another initiative run by Sailing Passion asbl: the European Schools Cup, which will be held for the fourteenth time from 28 March to 4 April 2026. The event brings together students aged twelvw to eighteen from Luxembourg and across Europe for a sailing challenge in the Adriatic Sea, with 31 boats and crews taking part.
The anniversary evening concluded in a relaxed and convivial atmosphere, with guests continuing their exchanges over finger food and drinks.
