Following a stipulation introduced by the European Commission last year that all airports must conform to new certification, which abides by new regulations, Luxembourg’s Minister of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure (MDDI), François Bausch has appointed the Administration of Air Navigation (ANA) to oversee the preparation of Luxembourg Airport for the new certification.
ANA, which manages the air traffic and technical services of the airport, is currently ensuring that several requirements relating to infrastructure and the management of activities at and around the airport are met to comply with the new certification by end of 2017 latest.
The new regulation is an opportunity to further enhance the safety of airport operations, as well as a good chance to define the various activities operated by different organisations, in order to pool together certain resources, ensuring greater transparency for the airlines.
Luxembourg Airport is of vital importance to the country, both for the general public and the business world. As a result, undertaking this major project requires a great deal of cooperation from the different entities involved in the airport’s daily activities.
A taskforce has been created to coordinate and oversee the certification project, including representatives of ANA, lux-Airport, Luxair, Cargolux, Luxfuel, and the Administration des Ponts et Chaussées.
They will communicate via a newsletter, updating the progress of the certification status, aiming to highlight the importance of the project and explain the present and future activities.
The new requirements apply to all airport-related activities, including ground safety of passengers, crew, and staff on the tarmac; the management of wildlife to minimise the risks of collisions with birds; runway lighting, signs, maintenance during winter period, and tarmac repair; aircraft refuelling and airport contingency plan.
Obtaining certification is crucial to the sustainability of airport operations, the airline activities, general and business aviation, and passengers.
