On Wednesday 18 June 2025, Vodafone formally revealed that construction has begun on its pan-European logistics hub in Bettembourg with a symbolic event celebrating the first column placement, marking the start of a project that reinforces Luxembourg’s role in Europe’s supply chain.
The formal ceremony was held in front of a group of around 70 guests and involved a number of speeches (all in English) by representatives of the government, the local municipality, the investors and the developers.
MG Real Estate President, Ignace De Paepe, said he was very proud to oversee the placement of "column 161" for this 36,000 m2 logistics hub development, including offices. He said that construction work started in March and they plan to hand over the first phase to Vodafone in December; he thanked Bettembourg for their fast processing of their permit application.
Luxembourg’s Minister of the Economy, SME, Energy and Tourism, Lex Delles, talked about trusted relationships and investments into Luxembourg’s strategic development. He also mentioned Vodafone being a major player in Luxembourg’s startup scene (their Tomorrow Street incubator), emphasising sustainability in both the supply chain and in the building construction.
Jean-Marie Jans, Deputy Mayor in Bettembourg, represented the mayor, Laurent Zeimet, and spoke about Bettembourg’s intermodal terminal and excellent road network. He also mentioned the Parc Mervielleux that attracts thousands of visitors (mainly families) each year. On this specific project, he described it as a "symbol of strength and shared vision of the future we are building together".
Vodafone Procure & Connect CEO, Ninian Wilson, recalled that the first idea came in the back of a black cab (taxi) in London a number of years ago, on the way to a Christmas party. He said that Vodafone now has over 400 staff in Luxembourg and looks forward to building the supply chain to a high-standard. He said that he hopes for more investment and projects in the future from Vodafone.
The speakers then donned hard hats and high-visibility jackets and proceeded across the construction site to where the first column placement was to take place. Ninian Wilson operated the crane's controls to lower the column into the relevant bored hole, with the engraving visible to all.
Talking with Chronicle.lu, when asked about the future for Bettembourg/Luxembourg after the WSA facility which closed a number of years ago, Minister Delles stated "We see that the future is being constructed and invested here, a huge construction of 36,000 m2 of logistics buildings. At the same time, Vodafone Luxembourg will grow its activity to have its European Procurement Centre here in Bettembourg, so we can see the future of logistics developing not only here in Bettembourg, but strategically for Luxembourg. So, you mention the WSA, we will see how to develop more rail logistics on the one hand, with companies like Vodafone growing their activities here in Luxembourg". He added that it is very important both economically and politically. He also revealed that other companies and activities are hoping to start here in the coming years; he confirmed that discussions are ongoing but contracts have not yet been signed.
