On Thursday 1 July 2021, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Panama, Erika Mouynes, paid a working visit to Luxembourg.
Panama's Foreign Minister was received by his Luxembourg counterpart, Jean Asselborn, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, for a working meeting at Senningen Castle. The meeting provided an opportunity to take stock of bilateral relations and their development prospects. Luxembourg and Panama established diplomatic relations in 1985, and ministers discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations, including economic relations.
The two foreign ministers also examined cooperation between Luxembourg and Panama in multilateral forums, particularly in the fight against climate change and at the level of candidatures.
Afterwards, they had an in-depth discussion on the regional situation in Central America. Luxembourg's Foreign Minister expressed his concern over developments in the region, particularly in Nicaragua.
Panama's Foreign Minister also had a bilateral meeting with Luxembourg's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Mobility and Public Works, François Bausch, during which the latter and Panama's Ambassador to Luxembourg, Yavel Francis, signed an air transport agreement between the two countries. This agreement will establish a regulatory framework that is favourable to businesses and the development of economic relations and trade.
Minister François Bausch welcomed the signing of this agreement, which illustrates the will of Luxembourg and Panama to take a new step in strengthening their economic and commercial ties.
