On Friday 31 July 2021, the Vëlosummer 2021 initiative was launched at the Heringer Millen in Mullerthal, in the presence of Luxembourg's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Mobility and Public Works, François Bausch, the Minister of Tourism, Lex Delles, along with Andrée Henx-Greischer, mayor of Waldbillig.

Given the success of the first edition of the "Vëlosummer 2020" with more than 40,000 participating cyclists, a second edition began this Saturday, 31 July and will run until Sunday 29 August 2021.

The "Vëlosummer 2021" is characterised by a doubling of cycle tourist routes and a tripling of the participating municipalities compared to last year's edition. A total of 12 cyclo-tourist circuits with more than 550 kilometres in 65 different municipalities can be travelled by fans of cycling.

Minister Delles presented the varied tourism promotion of “Vëlosummer 2021”. The Directorate General of Tourism has published a map made from recycled paper and illustrating the 12 cycling routes. This map, which notably highlights restaurants and cafés and tourist points of interest along the routes, is available in the various Tourist Information points and can be ordered online at www.velosummer.lu. This site also offers additional information and details about cycle tourist routes.

The participating municipalities and the five regional tourist offices (ORTs) also contribute to the “Vëlosummer 2021” tourism framework programme. The regional tourist offices place particular emphasis on Horeca establishments as well as local businesses located in the vicinity of the twelve sections of the "Vëlosummer 2021" through a sticker competition. The “Luxembourg Sky Swing”, a swing that invites you on a virtual journey through Luxembourg, will also be present on various sections.

In addition, the luggage service of the Directorate-General for Tourism (movewecarry.lu), allowing cyclists to have their luggage delivered free of charge from one accommodation to another, is again available. Accommodation vouchers of €50 can also be used until 15 September 2021 and therefore also during "Vëlosummer 2021".

Lex Delles stated “Following the great success of last year, which demonstrated that Luxembourg is a must-see destination for bicycle tourism, we have decided to expand the 'Vëlosummer' offer. The 2021 edition will thus include not only 12 circuits but also a variety of tourist offers. In this way, we encourage residents, cross-border workers and foreign tourists to discover our varied and unspoiled nature, our cultural attractions, our local shops and our friendly Horeca establishments."

François Bausch said “Since 2020, we have been experiencing a real renaissance in cycling in Luxembourg. The bicycle as an efficient, climate-friendly, safe and healthy mode of transport has become an essential link in current and future mobility. The selection of national roads, which will be reserved for cyclists in August, will perfectly fill the gaps in our national cycling network. In addition, we have extended state subsidies on bicycles to respond to this trend”.
