On Friday 10 July 2026, the University of Luxembourg announced that Rector Jens Kreisel has taken the decision to not seek a second term at the end of his current term, which will expire on 31 December 2027.

The Board of Governors of the University of Luxembourg said that Prof Jens Kreisel had indicated that he now wishes to devote his experience and energy to the major scientific challenges of the future as a scholar.

The Board stipulated that this announcement is made in accordance with the University’s governance rules, which provide that the Rector must inform the Board of Governors of his intentions no later than eighteen months before the end of his mandate. In accordance with the law and the University’s governance rules, the Board will initiate a recruitment procedure in the coming weeks, with a view to the next Rector taking office on 1 January 2028.

The Board said it received this decision with regret while respecting Prof Jens Kreisel’s choice and recognised his commitment to the University of Luxembourg.

Prof Jens Kreisel will continue to exercise his functions and to lead the University’s activities and strategic projects until 31 December 2027. From January 2028, he will serve as professor of physics and materials science at the University of Luxembourg.
