Luxembourg's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs has announced that temporary protection certificates for Ukrainian refugees are coming up for renewal, following the extension of temporary protection until 4 March 2024.

The ministry noted that from March 2022, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Luxembourg, like all European Union (EU) Member States, applied the temporary protection mechanism for people fleeing Ukraine. This emergency mechanism, initially applicable for a period of twelve months from its activation, i.e. until 4 March 2023, has been extended until 4 March 2024.

In view of this extension, the ministry recalled that the certificates issued to beneficiaries of temporary protection to attest to their status, initially valid until 3 March 2023, should now be renewed. The ministry confirmed that all beneficiaries of temporary protection have been contacted over the past few weeks, by registered letter, to inform them of the procedure to be followed.

The Foreign Ministry's Directorate of Immigration is now calling on anyone who has not yet taken the necessary steps to renew their certificate to follow the instructions provided in this letter. Beneficiaries of temporary protection residing in Luxembourg, whose temporary protection certificate expires on 3 March 2023 and who have not received such a letter, should contact the Immigration Directorate via email: immigration.desk@mae.etat.lu.

The ministry emphasised that the extension of this certificate before 4 March 2023 is necessary so that the persons concerned can continue to benefit from the rights linked to temporary protection.
