On Tuesday 16 June 2026, the City of Luxembourg (VdL) marked the official start of construction works on its new sports complex in Luxembourg-Hamm, which will include an athletics stadium, a large sports hall, a weightlifting hall and a public park.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place in the presence of Lydie Polfer, Mayor of Luxembourg City, Martine Hansen, Luxembourg's Minister of Sport, members of the College of Aldermen and Municipal Council, representatives of the project partners and around 50 attendees.

Speaking at the ceremony, Lydie Polfer thanked the municipal services, architects and project partners involved in preparing the development. She recalled that the Municipal Council had approved €16.5 million for site preparation works and €110.7 million for the construction of the sports complex, describing the project as a major investment in the capital's sporting infrastructure. The Mayor also noted that the development would include a public park and recreational areas for residents alongside the sports facilities.

Minister Hansen highlighted the importance of accessible sports infrastructure in encouraging physical activity and supporting public health. She welcomed the City's investment in new facilities and expressed hope that the project would progress smoothly towards its planned completion.

In December 2025, Luxembourg City approved the sports complex project for a twelve-hectare site at 157B, rue de Hamm. The development will comprise a World Athletics Construction Category 1 athletics stadium, a large sports hall, a weightlifting hall and a 1.8-hectare public park.

According to the VdL, site preparation works began in May 2026 and are expected to continue until May 2027. Construction of the buildings is scheduled to start in November 2026, while outdoor landscaping works, including the athletics facilities, are due to begin at the end of 2027. The entire project is expected to be completed by April 2029.

Speaking to Chronicle.lu, Jean-Sébastien Dauch, Director General of the Luxembourg Athletics Federation (FLA), said the new venue could create opportunities for Luxembourg to host international athletics events in the future: “First, I think we could host the Games of the Small States of Europe in 2029. After that, we will see. We have not planned anything yet, but it is such a beautiful venue and stadium that we can imagine many possibilities.”

He added that the facility could potentially host youth European championships or the European Champion Clubs Cup in athletics: “It will have eight lanes, which is better than the current stadium at the INS. It will be the best athletics stadium in the country and a very good opportunity to promote athletics.”

Further details about the project can be found in Chronicle.lu's report published in December 2025.
