The Japanese retailer UNIQLO opened the doors of its first shop in Luxembourg (22 Grand-Rue, Luxembourg-Ville) on Thursday 26 October 2023.
The opening on Thursday morning followed a Japanese taiko drummer performance and a ribbon cutting ceremony in the presence of the Mayor of the City of Luxembourg (Ville de Luxembourg), Lydie Polfer, and the Japanese Ambassador to Luxembourg, Matsubara Tadahiro.
Aiming to provide clothing that is designed to make life better, UNIQLO is recognised for LifeWear: innovative, high-quality clothing that is considered universally appealing in design and comfort.
From 26 October until 4 November 2023, the Grand-Rue shop is offering special opening promotions in-store. UNIQLO also launched the UNIQLO and JW Anderson Fall - Winter 2023 collection in Luxembourg, as a world exclusive, on Thursday.
For the opening of the UNIQLO Grand-Rue shop, the retailer has partnered with various local talents and institutions in order to showcase their work as well as connect with the local community. In line with other partnerships UNIQLO has established with major art institutions like the MOMA in New York, Tate Modern in London and the Louvre in Paris, aiming to make art accessible to all, is its new collaboration with Mudam Luxembourg - Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean.
UNIQLO customers will be able to discover an exclusively curated reading area by Mudam in the Luxembourg shop. The reading area, curated by Mudam Director Bettina Steinbrügge, is set to be regularly updated.
Another partnership is with furniture designer Julie Conrad. Known for choosing recycled materials in her creations, Julie offers and develops collections that combine functionality and aesthetics, always with a narrative approach. For the UNIQLO Grand-Rue store, Julie not only designed the reading area, but she also created the "Loom Chairs". These chairs, with a simple wooden structure and a textile seat, were developed in collaboration with the carpenter Norbert Brakonier. Their seat is woven from fabrics from clothing brought by customers as part of the RE.UNIQLO initiative.
Additionally, to celebrate the opening of the first UNIQLO shop in Luxembourg, the retailer asked Luxembourg illustrator Lynn Cosyn, known for her colourful imaginary world and whimsical, poetic characters, to create an exclusive tote bag to be offered to the first 100 customers.
