Lidl has announced that it is further expanding its range of vegetarian and vegan products to be sold in its shops in Luxembourg.

As meat consumption continues to decline, according to Lidl, customers in Luxembourg are increasingly opting for plant-based meat alternatives. In response to this growing demand for animal-friendly alternatives, Lidl has decided to expand its vegetarian and vegan range. The supermarket chain aims to double its sales by 2025.

Lidl noted that the sales of meat substitute products increased by 60% between 2017 and 2020, and continues to grow. Although Luxembourg remains a country of meat consumers (80kg of meat is consumed on average per inhabitant), far ahead of Belgium (17kg) and Germany (59kg) but behind France (85kg), analysts believe that the consumption of traditional meat will gradually decline, while plant-based meat substitutes are experiencing rapid growth, stimulated in particular by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"At Lidl, we are fully aware of the impact that animal-friendly products have on the environment. In order to protect our planet, we must adapt our food model and progress towards vegetable proteins", explained Julien Wathieu, spokesperson for Lidl Belgium and Luxembourg. "It is in this context in particular that we have committed to doubling the sales of our vegetarian and vegan ranges between 2020 and 2025, thanks to the combination of a greater number of items and more special offers".

In 2021, consumers could choose from 73 vegetarian and vegan products and this number is now increasing by another 10% in response to the ever-increasing demand for plant-based food products.

Julien Wathieu added: "Vegan and vegetarian products are a great success with our consumers. Each year, we add new references to our range in order to meet the demand of our customers and to continually offer them new, varied and quality products".
