The supermarket chain Lidl has announced that it is continuing its expansion in Luxembourg, with an investment of more than €30 million.
After celebrating its 20th anniversary in Luxembourg a few months ago, Lidl is continuing work aimed at transforming and expanding its stores. These projects are expected to create 60 new jobs in the Grand Duchy.
The Lidl store in Beggen opened its doors on Wednesday 1 December 2021. The expansion works increased the sales area from 1,285 m² to 1,710 m² (+33%). The car park had already been extended from 96 to 120 spaces. Solar panels have also been installed to supply the store with renewable energy. Ten new employees will strengthen the existing team.
A new store will open next year in Koerich, where the first customers will be expected in summer 2022. The site is currently in the preparation phase. Soon, it will accommodate a 1,415 m² sales area as well as 108 parking spaces, including four terminals for electric vehicles and a bicycle terminal. Moreover, nearly 450 solar panels will be installed and around 25 employees will be recruited.
Finally, earthworks are currently underway in Dudelange where the supermarket chain plans to open its thirteenth Luxembourg store. Construction work is scheduled for the end of this year and the store, with an area of 1,249 m² on the ground floor, is expected to open its doors during the first quarter of 2023. It will notably include a car park with 78 outdoor parking spaces and 64 underground spaces. As part of this mixed project, professional spaces will be available upstairs - one part for internal use and another for rental. This new store will see the recruitment of 25 new employees.
"The reopening of the Beggen store marks the start of a new phase in our expansion. In addition to meeting the ever-changing needs of our customers, we want to remain ambitious in our plans for the future, and continue to grow", commented Julien Wathieu, spokesperson for Lidl Luxembourg. "These different projects are part of our strategy. More than €30 million will be invested in Luxembourg, more than 60 new colleagues will be recruited. This is a positive announcement that we are happy and proud to share with our employees and customers who have trusted us for the past 20 years!"
In addition to its expansion plans, Lidl has pledged to reduce food waste as much as possible and support those most in need through its collaboration with local organisations. Once again this year, Lidl organised its “Bon appétit, Zéro gaspi” action in all its Luxembourg stores. This initiative is expected to enable Lidl to reduce food waste by 50% by 2025 (compared to the 2015 level). The principle is simple: Lidl sells products that remain fit for consumption at discounted prices. The revenues generated by the initiative are directly donated to the social grocery stores of Caritas and the Luxembourg Red Cross. This year, Lidl presented the two non-profits with a cheque for €50,000, an amount which is 40% higher than that raised last year.
