Inspections on compliance with the plastic bag levy in Luxembourg found that 28 out of 450 establishments did not comply with the legal provisions.

Towards the end of 2019, the Customs and Excise Agency carried out, at the request of the Environment Agency, checks to ensure that establishments across the Grand Duchy were no longer distributing plastic bags free of charge.

During the first inspections carried out in November and December 2019, the Customs and Excise Agency inspected 450 points of sale (shops, restaurants and other establishments). In all, 28 establishments (6.25%) reportedly did not comply with legal provisions. In this context, the agents reminded the operators concerned of the legal provisions applicable with regard to the distribution of plastic bags.

At the end of February 2020, the agents of the Control and Inspection Unit of the Environment Agency carried went back to check the 28 non-compliant establishments once again. Only one infraction was recorded and the establishment concerned received an administrative fine of €500.
