Lidl has recalled "Kong Strong Sugar Free Energy Drink XXL" energy drinks from its Luxembourg stores due to absence of an indication of aspartame on the label.

Lidl informed the Luxembourg food safety authorities of the recall of the following product due to the unlabelled presence of the artificial sweetener aspartame (and therfore phenylalanine): Kong Strong Sugar Free Energy Drink XXL (500ml tin) with the expiry date 28/02/2020 and the barcode 4 056489 118411. Only products with the expiry date indicated are affected.

The health risk is limited to people with phenylketonuria (PKU) who must strictly adhere to a diet low in phenylalanine. Anyone else can consume the product safely.

Although the product in question has been withdrawn from sale in Lidl stores, a large part of the inventory was sold to consumers. Consequently, the Luxembourg Food Safety Authorities have recommended that consumers suffering from PKU not consume this product.
