Lidl Luxembourg has announced its decision to sell only Fairtrade bananas in its shops.

By offering only fair trade bananas, the supermarket chain will have 658,000 kilograms of additional sustainable fruit, which will have a big impact on the volume of Fairtrade bananas. According to the Fairtrade Lëtzebuerg NGO, this measure provides better income for a large number of banana producers.

Indeed, every year, the discounter sells some 742,000 kilograms of bananas. The decision of Lidl to sell only Fairtrade bananas will allow a 39% growth of these bananas on the Luxembourg market.

Finally, Lidl Luxembourg has set a target of increasing annual turnover of sustainable products by 10%. This is not the first collaboration between Fairtrade and Lidl; last year, Lidl opted for Fairtrade for its best-selling chocolate bars from its leading distributor brand. More than 60 tonnes of chocolate were sold in one year in the Grand Duchy.
