On Monday 10 February 2025, Luxembourg's railways, the Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois (CFL), announced that the first of its new "Coradia Stream High Capacity" electric trains has completed a cross-border journey beyond the Grand Duché frontier.
The inaugural journey to Arlon, departing from Luxembourg Gare at 14:53, was accompanied by CFL Management: Sophie Lacour, Director of Passenger Activities, Luc Schmalen, Head of Trains and Rolling Stock and Mike Strotz, Head of Passenger Rolling Stock Procurement.
"This first journey beyond the Belgian-Luxembourg border marks another significant milestone in the gradual introduction of our new trains. I am delighted that CFL can now offer this state-of-the-art rolling stock to a portion of its passengers travelling to Luxembourg from Belgium, as well as those using the intermediate stops between Arlon and Luxembourg,” stated Mike Strotz.
Sophie Lacour added: “This first journey of a Coradia train on the Luxembourg - Kleinbettingen - Arlon route is the result of close collaboration between our internal experts, our supplier ALSTOM and our Belgian counterparts.”
While phasing out the older Z2 series 2000 electric multiple units, CFL will increase seating capacity by 46% by 2026 with the progressive introduction of 34 new Coradia Stream High Capacity trains.
CFL noted that as on the Luxembourg - Diekirch route, the new Coradia trains operating between Luxembourg and Arlon will run in a three-car configuration, offering 334 seats on board.
In 2025, the Coradia trains of the 2400 series (three-car configuration) will be operated in multiple-unit mode (two three-car train sets), doubling the available seating capacity. At the same time, CFL is expected to receive operating authorisation for the 2450 series (six-car Coradia configuration with approximately 700 seats) in the second half of 2025.
