In 2024, the Luxembourg National Railway Company (CFL) welcomed 31.3 million passengers aboard its trains, surpassing the previous record of 28.7 million set in 2023; this marks a 10% increase year-on-year.

The CFL said this increase underscores the growing appeal of its services and highlights the central role of trains in public transport both within Luxembourg and in neighbouring regions. Over the past two decades, the number of passengers has more than doubled, rising from 14.1 million in 2005 to 31.3 million in 2024.

With 9.9 million passengers in 2024, the Luxembourg - Esch-sur-Alzette - Rodange line remains the busiest on the railway network. The most significant increase, however, was recorded on the Luxembourg - Wasserbillig - Trier line, with passenger numbers up by 18.01% compared to 2023.

The 2024 passenger data for CFL trains, broken down by railway line with the growth rate compared to 2023 in parentheses, is as follows:

Luxembourg - Ettelbruck - Troisvierges - Gouvy: 6.8 million (+17.24%)
Luxembourg - Wasserbillig - Trier: 2.5 million (+18.01%)
Luxembourg - Kleinbettingen - Arlon: 2.6 million (+1.74%)
Luxembourg - Esch-sur-Alzette - Rodange: 9.9 million (+8.78%)
Luxembourg - Bascharage-Sanem - Rodange - Athus / Longwy: 3.6 million (+3.05%)
Luxembourg - Thionville - Metz: 5.9 million (+4.26%)

According to Marc Wengler, Director General of the CFL: “The steady increase in train ridership, apart from the COVID-19 crisis period, is the greatest reward for the daily dedication of our more than 5,000 employees. By placing their trust and loyalty in us, our passengers reaffirm the relevance of our customer-focused strategy, enriched by their feedback, which we actively seek throughout the year. More than ever, we aim to remain the first mobility choice for our passengers through our range of interconnected mobility solutions centred around the train - one of the most environmentally friendly modes of transport and fully aligned with the challenges of our time.”

According to CFL, one of the most notable recent developments was the introduction of the first new Coradia trains in September 2024, offering state-of-the-art comfort. With the gradual deployment of 34 Coradia multiple units by 2026, CFL is delivering on a historic investment in its train fleet and will offer 46% more seating capacity to its passengers. In 2024, the Rodange station was inaugurated in its new configuration, designed to accommodate longer trains (offering more seating capacity) and to improve punctuality by separating train traffic from different lines.
