On Wednesday 24 June 2026, Luxembourg’s Ministry of Mobility and Public Works, the Public Transport Administration, the Administration of Bridges and Roads, Luxtram and the City of Luxembourg (VdL) announced details of the works will take place on the tram development in Luxembourg-Kirchberg this summer.
Between late July and mid-August 2026, taking advantage of the school holiday period and summer holidays, tram extension works will result in a partial interruption of the line in Kirchberg. At the same time, refurbishment works on the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge and modernisation works on the Schuman Tunnel, requiring the temporary closure of the latter, will affect travel conditions. Alternative arrangements are being put in place by Luxtram, the VdL, the Public Transport Administration and the Administration of Bridges and Roads to ensure continuity of mobility and limit impacts on users.
As part of the continued development of the tram network in Luxembourg City and the improvement of sustainable mobility, works to connect the first extension to the tram line currently in service will be carried out at the junction of Avenue John F. Kennedy and Boulevard Konrad Adenauer.
These works will be complemented by the construction of the platform for the new tram extension, enabling its connection to the existing network and thereby gradually strengthening a continuous and efficient public transport service focused on the quality of journeys and the well-being of users.
Maintaining tram services: a partial, temporary and localised Interruption
To ensure that these works are carried out under the best possible safety and quality conditions, a temporary and localised interruption of tram services will be implemented from 22:00 on Wednesday 22 July until Sunday 9 August 2026 inclusive. This interruption concerns only the section located in Kirchberg between the Rout Bréck – Pfaffenthall and Philharmonie – Mudam stations.
Throughout the works period, trams will continue to operate along the remainder of the line, organised into two sections on either side of the works area:
- Station Stadion ↔ Station Rout Bréck – Pfaffendall (temporary terminus)
- Station Philharmonie – Mudam ↔ Station Findel – Luxembourg Airport (temporary terminus)
All tram stations will continue to be served and only travel between these two temporary termini will be interrupted.
During this period, tram frequency will be maintained, with services every six minutes during the day until 19:30 and every ten minutes in the evening, ensuring continuity of service under the best possible conditions.
A safe and signposted pedestrian route
To ensure continuity of travel, users may walk between the two affected stations, which are separated by a distance of 450m. To guarantee comfort and safety, a secure pedestrian route and dedicated signage will be provided.
Users are advised to allow an additional ten to fifteen minutes when planning their journeys.
Clear information and on-site assistance
To ensure straightforward and stress-free travel during this period, a comprehensive and accessible information programme will be deployed to assist users throughout their journeys.
In addition, from the beginning of July, regular announcements will be made on board trams, on platforms and through digital channels.
Moreover, to provide local assistance, Luxtram staff will be present at the temporary termini from Thursday 23 July to Sunday 9 August. They will be available to guide users and answer questions.
The site mediation team will also remain available to the public for any additional information via tel: 26 20 28 20 or email: travaux@luxtram.lu.
Traffic arrangements
As part of these works, Boulevard Konrad Adenauer will be closed to all traffic on the section between Avenue John F. Kennedy (western exit) and Rue Charles-Léon Hammes from 22:00 on Wednesday 22 July until Saturday 15 August 2026 inclusive.
Adjustments to municipal bus services
During the works to connect the new tram extension, several adjustments will be made to bus services in order to ensure continuity of travel, particularly between the city centre, Kirchberg and the airport.
From 22:00 on Wednesday 22 July until Saturday 15 August 2026 inclusive, AVL routes 6, 16, 18, 21 and CN5 will, in addition to the diversions already in place towards the city centre, also be diverted towards Kirchberg via Rue du Fort Niedergrünewald and Rue Charles-Léon Hammes. During this period, the B.E.I. Quai 1 stop will not be served. Users are invited to use the replacement stops Philharmonie/Mudam Quai 1 and Niedergrünewald Quai 1.
In addition, AVL route 29 provides a direct alternative to the airport from the stops Howald, Gare/P+R Quai 2, Lycée Bouneweg/P+R Quai 1 and Gare Centrale Quai 1.
Tram users also have an alternative route to the airport via AVL routes 6 and 16, accessible from the Hamilius Quai 1 and Stäreplaz/Étoile Quai 1 stops. From the airport, AVL routes 6, 16 and 29 also provide a direct connection to the city centre and central railway station without the need to change services.
Additional Works at the Schuman Tunnel
In addition to the tram connection works, further works are scheduled by the Administration of Bridges and Roads at the Schuman Tunnel (OA818) in Limpertsberg. These will take place from 22:00 on Friday 10 July until 17:00 on Friday 14 August 2026, with site preparation commencing on Wednesday 1 July 2026. To limit the overall duration, works will be carried out continuously, seven days a week and 24 hours a day.
These works are intended to ensure the long-term sustainability of the structure and maintain safe traffic conditions. They include repairs to certain structural elements and the modernisation of tunnel equipment.
The tunnel will be closed to all traffic from 22:00 on Friday 10 July until 17:00 on Friday 14 August 2026. The Administration of Bridges and Roads will use the closure period to carry out surface stripping tests. These tests will help define the scope of road refurbishment works planned for 2027. Localised repairs to deteriorated areas may also be carried out.
Alternative routes will be provided to facilitate travel:
• within the city, buses will be directed via Allée Scheffer to maintain services to Kirchberg in both directions;
• on the motorway network, motorists travelling from Belgium and France will be directed to Kirchberg via the Serra roundabout.
In this context, on the RGTR network, routes 811 and 812 will be diverted towards Kirchberg via Boulevard Prince Henri and Avenue de la Porte-Neuve. All stops will continue to be served.
The City of Luxembourg Traffic Service will ensure that appropriate signage is installed in due course.
Works supporting expanded and attractive mobility
Luxtram, the Administration of Bridges and Roads, the VdL, the Public Transport Administration and the Ministry of Mobility and Public Works noted that these works form part of a wider strategy aimed at sustainably improving the quality of travel for all users. They contribute to more accessible and smoother mobility while strengthening the attractiveness of free public transport and ensuring the long-term sustainability of essential infrastructure.
They also contribute to reducing emissions and are accompanied by a constant commitment to safety, both for people and for the structures concerned.
Particular attention is being paid to the coordination of all interventions and to respecting all stakeholders in order to limit impacts and ensure effective delivery.
Luxtram, the Administration of Bridges and Roads, the City of Luxembourg, the Public Transport Administration and the Ministry of Mobility and Public Works thanked users for their understanding and cooperation during this essential phase, which will enable the continued development of ever more sustainable, reliable, safe and efficient mobility.
