Luxembourg's national railway company, the CFL, has reported that rail travel will be impacted by two major work periods between Saturday 13 July and Sunday 15 September 2024.

As announced by the CFL at the end of January 2024, rail services on the Luxembourg- Esch-sur-Alzette-Rodange and Luxembourg-Bettembourg-Thionville lines will be impacted by various works this summer.

The works will be divided into two phases: the closure of Bettembourg train station from Saturday 13 July to Sunday 11 August 2024 and the interruption of traffic between Luxembourg and Bettembourg from Monday 12 August to Sunday 15 September 2024. During the works period(s), the CFL will provide a replacement bus service.

Closure of Bettembourg station from 13 July to 11 August

The CFL explained that the renewal work on the Hammerel bridge by the National Roads Administration will require the complete closure of the Bettembourg station to ensure the safety of travellers and on-site personnel. Trains will not run in either direction between:
- Luxembourg and Thionville;
- Luxembourg and Esch-sur-Alzette;
- Luxembourg/Bettembourg and Volmerange-les-Mines;
- Noertzange and Rumelange.

A replacement bus service organised in both directions and taking into account the train occupancy rate will be put in place. Customers are asked to allow between 30 and 45 minutes of additional travel time.

The replacement buses are:
- Bus L90 Luxembourg (Gare Rocade) - Howald - Bettembourg - Hettange-Grande - Thionville (departs every 30 minutes during rush hour and every hour outside rush hour);
- Bus L91 Luxembourg (Gare Rocade) - Thionville (direct; departs every five minutes during rush hour);
- Bus L94 Luxembourg (Gare Rocade) - Howald - Thionville (departs every ten minutes during rush hour and every 30 minutes outside rush hour);
- Bus L60: Luxembourg (Gare routière) - Bettembourg - Esch-sur-Alzette (departs every fifteen minutes);
- Bus L62: Luxembourg (Gare routière) - Esch-sur-Alzette (direct; departs every fifteen minutes during rush hour and every 30 minutes outside rush hour);
- Bus L63: Bonnevoie, Lycée Bouneweg - Bettembourg - Dudelange - Volmerange (departs every 30 minutes);
- TGV Luxembourg - Metz bus (reserved for TGV customers).

Customers may also consider using the following RGTR bus services: 501, 502, 503 and 504 towards Thionville; 505 and 506 towards Hayange and Metzange; 551 to reach Esch-Belval from Thionville; 507 between Luxembourg and Volmerange-les-Mines; 508 and 601 for Luxembourg, Rumelange and Ottange; 511, 512 and 513 between Luxembourg and Bettembourg.

Trains will continue to run between Esch-sur-Alzette and Rodange (all stops served).

Interruption of Luxembourg - Bettembourg rail travel from 12 August to 15 September

During this second period, the CFL will continue to carry out work on the future connection of the new Luxembourg - Bettembourg line at the Bettembourg and Luxembourg railway stations. This closure period will notably make it possible to continue the extension of the Howald interchange hub.

Equipped with a second platform and new tracks, this work will connect the tracks of the new line to the capital and physically separate train traffic from the Luxembourg - Esch-sur-Alzette - Rodange and Luxembourg - Bettembourg - Thionville lines. From 2028, this work is expected to improve the offer from and to France.

A shuttle bus between Luxembourg and Bettembourg will depart every five minutes during rush hour and every fifteen minutes outside rush hour.

From Rodange to Paris by TGV for the Olympic Games

During these works, a high-speed connection from Rodange will take customers to Paris for the Olympic Games. From Sunday 28 July to Sunday 11 August 2024, one TGV per day will depart from Paris-Est towards Rodange and vice versa. Due to the adapted route, customers should allow approximately 45 minutes of additional travel time from Rodange.

The CFL also noted that a TGV has been set up from Rodange towards Montpellier. Among the stops served are Metz, Strasbourg, Dijon, Lyon, Valence and Nîmes.
