Luxembourg's railway company, the CFL, has presented details of the fourth phase of major engineering works being carried out on the country's rail network this year; this phase will run from 15 September to 12 December 2021.

Phase 4 works:

Lines 10 (Luxembourg - Troisvierges - Gouvy) and 30 (Luxembourg - Wasserbillig - Trier): Transformation of Luxembourg Station

For several years the CFL has been committed to making Luxembourg Station (Gare de Luxembourg) bigger and better. During the third phase of the 2021 works, which will soon come to an end, the main node of the Luxembourg rail network has visibly changed. These construction and conversion works will continue at Luxembourg Station during phase 4 of the works. Unlike in previous weeks, a northbound track will again be available.

By December 2021, two additional platforms, as well as four additional platform tracks, will be available at Luxembourg Station. In order to make the most of the additional capacity, the station's railway track plan is also being adapted. As part of this work, the tracks and switches in the northern part of Luxembourg Station will be completely overhauled up to the end of 2021. The adaptation of the track plan for the southern part of the station will commence in 2022. This work will make it possible to increase the capacity of this main railway junction, physically separate the various train lines, reduce postponements and delays at Luxembourg Station and thus improve the operation and punctuality of trains.

Sections concerned: Luxembourg - Troisvierges - Gouvy; Luxembourg - Ettelbruck - Diekirch; Luxembourg - Sandweiler-Contern; Luxembourg - Sandweiler-Contern - Oetrange.

Line 10 (Luxembourg - Troisvierges - Gouvy): Exchange hubs

The CFL is also working to improve the connection of the north of the country to public transport, particularly by building exchange hubs in Ettelbruck and Mersch. At the same time, preparatory work is being carried out within the framework of the P+R project in Troisvierges, which will come into service in spring 2023 and will offer 389 parking spaces. Work to set up the new digital innovation director position on line 10 will be continued. The CFL will also take advantage of the different closure periods to carry out maintenance work on several tunnels. Preparatory work is planned for the removal of the PN20b level crossing in Lorentzweiler. For active mobility fans, a dedicated underground tunnel will also be set up in Schieren.

In order to allow the safe execution of works near the tracks by the Roads Administration, such works will also be carried out within the framework of the closure periods provided for by the CFL. Projects include the construction of a viaduct in Clervaux and maintenance work on a bridge in Maulusmühle, as well as work on the national cycle path network.

Line 50 (Luxembourg - Kleinbettingen - Arlon)

In order to avoid danger during the work carried out as part of the widening of the Buchler bridge over the railway tracks and to the south of Luxembourg Station, this line will be closed for a weekend in September. The same is true for maintenance work being carried out on engineering structures in Mamer and Bertrange, as well as maintenance work on numerous switches in the southern part of Luxembourg Station, which in the event of a technical failure could cause major disruptions.

Sections concerned: Luxembourg - Kleinbettingen - Arlon.

Lines 60 (Luxembourg - Esch-sur-Alzette - Pétange) and 90 (Luxembourg - Bettembourg - Thionville): New line between Luxembourg and Bettembourg

Work on the new line between Luxembourg and Bettembourg aimed at relieving the busiest section of the Luxembourg rail network will also continue during the fourth phase of works. In addition to the work carried out on the future 200 metre-long double arch railway bridge (OA14), other preparatory work will be carried out for the future connection of the new line to Bettembourg Station. Work will also continue on the new footbridge which will provide barrier-free access to the station platforms from the end of 2021.

In addition, various maintenance work will be carried out on the railway infrastructures, for example in Livange. In Noertzange, part of Platform 2 will be renovated.

Sections concerned: Luxembourg - Bettembourg; Esch-sur-Alzette - Rodange; Bettembourg - Esch-sur-Alzette; Noertzange - Rumelange; Luxembourg - Thionville.

Line 70 (Luxembourg - Rodange - Athus - Longwy)

For two weekends (one in September, the other in October), line 70 will be affected by work as part of the extension of the Buchler bridge over the tracks of the southern part of Luxembourg Station. During these same periods, the CFL will carry out maintenance work on the PN5 level crossing at Dippach Station and the Bascharage-Sanem platforms.

Sections concerned: Luxembourg - Hollerich; Luxembourg - Pétange.
