St George's International School Luxembourg has announced that its student-run lockdown radio show "Pass the Mic" has received global recognition with a special achievement award.
Three Year 10 GCSE Media Studies students at St George's, Julia, Georgia and Alex, recently took up the challenge of creating a series of radio shows aimed at helping to tackle the stress and isolation of the current lockdown in Luxembourg associated with the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.
The resulting "Pass the Mic" radio show consists of ten-hour long broadcasts on Radio ARA. The three students behind the show have been recording their presenter links from home, sharing clips with one another and editing their work on iMac computers on loan from the school. The show is based around sharing messages from students, staff, parents, friends and family in Luxembourg and beyond during these unprecedented times.
The COBIS schools network recently asked for nominations from its over 500 member schools for global special achievement awards. Two weeks after the deadline had passed, St George's Media Studies teacher Mr Burrowes sent in the nomination, explaining the unique circumstances. Shortly after, he received confirmation that his students' efforts and achievement in "Pass the Mic" had been recognised with an award.
The first four shows have already aired, with the remaining six being broadcast on Radio ARA from 16:00 to 17:00 on 21, 22, 29 and 30 April and 1 May 2020. A slot for the final show remains to be confirmed.
