According to Luxembourg's Ministry of Education, Children and Youth, a total of 5,063 pupils have been offered places at secondary schools in the Grand Duchy, having successfully come though the national primary education system.
Of these five thousand pupils who have completed primary school at the end of the 2015-2016 school year:
• 35.5% were referred to 7th class in a lycée classique (7th ES);
• 47.7% were referred to a 7th class in a lycée technique (7th ST);
• 15.8% were referred to a preparatory classes for a lycée technique (7th MO);
• 1.0% benefit from an extended cycle in 2015-2016.
4,769 of the 5,063 pupils (94.2%) were classified in terms of the orientation process that takes place at the end of cycle 4.2. This provides a policy decision issued by the Steering Board, established for each class of 4.2 cycle. The decision is based on academic performance of the pupil, the parents and the results from tests, output from the pupil and the information collected by the psychologist, if parents chose for such an intervention.
294 of the 5,063 pupils (5.8%) were referred - because of their age or their slow educational achievement - to a 7th class before the regular end of primary education. Three of these pupils come from a 3.1 cycle, 37 pupils from a 3.2 cycle, 64 pupils from an extended 3 cycle and 190 pupils from a 4.1 cycle.
