Luxembourg's Christian Social People's Party (Chrëschtlech-Sozial Vollekspartei - CSV) confirmed in a press release on Friday afternoon that Frank Engel has resigned as party president.

Frank Engel announced his decision to step down during today's meeting of the CSV National Board. He had served as CSV president since January 2019.

Vice-presidents Elisabeth Margue and Stéphanie Weydert will now temporarily assume the party president's tasks and powers.

Earlier this week, as reported in other local media, CSV party members reported Frank Engel to the public prosecutor's office over claims that he had received an undisclosed salary from the non-profit CSV-Frëndeskrees.

The news of Mr Engel's resignation follows a press conference on Friday morning, in which he indicated that he would probably resign, although he maintained that he did not believe he had broken the law.
