At a meeting on 3 August 2015 with Helma Kuhn-Theis, responsible for European Affairs in Saarland, Luxembourg's Minister of Family, Integration and the Greater Region Corinne Cahen stated that the recent massive influx of refugees was reaching a critical point, calling for a European solution to the problem.
Minister Cahen explained that there is currently a surge in applicants requesting international protection in both Luxembourg and Saarland, emphasising Europe's need to develop a sustainable action plan that could adequately help the traumatised people who have fled their country in fear.
The two parties also discussed cross-border cooperation with regards to internal security, which has been employed in the past through an annual security services action plan between the two regions, as well as the use of German police offers to support the Luxembourg force during important events.
The two figures concluded the meeting with an exchange of views on the potential of cross-bording learning. Corinne Cahen spoke of a cross-border learning agreement that Luxembourg has signed with France, and stated her intent to advance this issue with Saarland through communication with the Ministry of National Education.
