Ahead of the Assises culturelles (Cultural Forum) taking place on 1 and 2 July 2016, Luxembourg Prime Minister, Minister of Culture, Xavier Bettel, and Secretary of State for Culture, Guy Arendt, presented a survey on the importance of culture in society on Tuesday.
The study, conducted by TNS-Ilres, showed that 67% of people in the country believe that culture is important for the future development of Luxembourg society - a fact welcomed by Xavier Bettel. The findings also demonstrated that culture is the basis for a modern, open, tolerant and inclusive society and that it is essential for integration.
Guy Arendt presented the cultural offer in Luxembourg, where 60% of the population believe it to be at least very good, whilst 71% think it is comparable to that proposed overseas.
At Tuesday's press conference, the first elements of the Assises culturelles programme were revealed. Thematic sessions will be held with a live debate with representatives from the cultural sector, followed by a discussion with the audience. The four sessions will be as follows:
- The school - a place of cultural transmission?
- Artist - a profession like any other?
- Promoting artistic creation. What strategy?
- Is culture recognised at its fair value in society?
The themed sessions will be preceded by presentations from speakers with particular experience in the field. Reports from the focus groups of the Assises culturelles will be published at www.gouvernement.lu/mc.
