At its weekly meeting on Friday 10 June, the cabinet of the Luxembourg government agreed changes are required to be made to the current Highway Code in light of the implementation of the forthcoming tram project in Luxembourg city.
The draft bill of law creates a legal framework in the field of security of the tram and adapts other legislation that would be affected by the introduction and circulation of this mode of transport in Luxembourg. The bill defines the security requirements for the tram system, including the safe management of infrastructure and traffic. The project plans, etc., refer to the law on the safety of the tram regarding provisions for the tram, except for requirements relating to traffic on public roads and road signs.
The new provisions particularly concern the definition of the tram, the introduction of areas for pedestrian to alight and the introduction of a second system of two-coloured lights and a system of single-coloured lights. The adaptation of existing provisions concerning, in particular, the change of name of the current passageway for cyclists and the definition of the user, the provisions relating to the crossing of roads by pedestrians and cyclists and excluding tram routes for vehicles.
