Luxembourg is mainly an attractive country in which to work for job-seekers who come from other EU countries; the world’s largest jobsite Indeed has released its report ‘Europe on the Move’, which focuses on cross-border job search in the EU.
Of all the online job searches from abroad that were aimed at Luxembourg, 85% originated in one of the fellow fifteen original EU nations (EU15). The Indeed report shows that small is apparently beautiful, as Belgium (70.8%) and the Netherlands (59%) are the countries with the second and third highest concentration of incoming inter-EU15 job searches.
The other way around, Luxembourg is also the country from where the largest proportion of international search is directed at other EU nations. Of the online searches originating in Luxembourg for jobs abroad, 71.1% focused on jobs in the EU15. Belgium (66.5%) and Austria (64.1%) are second and third on the list of most EU15 oriented job seekers.
“It is understandable, of course, that people in crisis-stricken southern European countries are looking for work elsewhere in the EU,” said Mariano Mamertino, EMEA Economist at Indeed and author of the report. “What is interesting is that when job seekers in better performing Benelux economies look abroad, they too are most likely to be looking in other EU countries, rather than beyond the borders of the bloc. It is likely that the cultural and linguistic affinities with their neighbours make them less adventurous and more EU-oriented when it comes to job search.”
Since there are no bureaucratic obstacles preventing EU citizens from moving to wherever they please within EU borders, a great deal of immigrations occurs internally. In fact, 95% of job searches originating in the EU15 are aimed at opportunities within the same group of countries. And when it comes to the EU as a whole, 75% of all online job searches focused on the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.
