On Thursday 21 April 2016, Luxembourg joined 21 other European countries in a 24-hour operation against speeding, under the supervision of the European Traffic Police Network (TISPOL) as a means of combatting speeding, which remains the leading cause of fatal accidents on roads.
In the Grand Duchy, the International Speed Marathon resulted in 199 controls with the majority involving driving with excessive speed. A total of 267 traffic offences were identified, with 5 drivers having their licences withdrawn. 17 cases were related to other infringements, including not wearing a seat belt or using a mobile phone while driving.
A total of 167 drivers received €49 fines, with another 68 being fined €145 with 2 points on their driving licence.
Between 16:00 to 17:30, for example, on the N2 between Bous and Remich, a total of 10 motorists driving too fast. Three drivers had their license withdrawn on the spot, with one drive recorded driving at 168 km/h in a 90 km/h zone. Another driver was caught speeding at 102 km/h in a 50 km/h zone in Sanem, on the rue de Niederkorn.
In the 24-hour period, the fixed radars caught 696 vehicles speeding.
